What to see at Piazza Bra

Six stops that tell two thousand years of history, from the Roman theatre to the 19th-century promenade.

I.
Verona Arena

Verona Arena

A Roman amphitheatre from the 1st century AD, today one of the most famous open-air opera venues in the world. It can hold up to 22,000 spectators, compared with around 30,000 in Roman times.

II.
The Ala of the Arena

The Ala

The only surviving fragment of the amphitheatre's original outer ring, which collapsed almost entirely in an earthquake in 1117. It lets you imagine the true scale of the Roman structure.

III.
Palazzo Barbieri

Palazzo Barbieri

Verona's town hall since 1869, a neoclassical building constructed between 1836 and 1848 to a design by architect Giuseppe Barbieri, from whom it takes its name.

IV.
Palazzo della Gran Guardia

Palazzo della Gran Guardia

Begun in 1610 by the Venetians to a design by Domenico Curtoni to house troops, and only completed in the 19th century. Today it hosts major exhibitions and cultural events.

V.
The Liston

The Liston

The wide promenade paved in red Valpolicella marble between 1770 and 1782 — the same marble used for the Arena. The historic gathering spot for the Veronese for their evening stroll.

VI.
Portoni della Bra and Victor Emmanuel II monument

Portoni della Bra and the Victor Emmanuel II Monument

A 14th-century gateway in the medieval walls marks the square's southern entrance. At the centre of the garden, the bronze equestrian statue of Italy's first king, surrounded by the Fountain of the Alps, was inaugurated in 1883.
